What a VPN does for a traveller
Three things, roughly in order of how often they matter.
It gets your home services working again. Streaming libraries change by country, banking apps sometimes refuse foreign IPs outright, and some sites geo-block entire regions. A VPN set to your home country usually restores normal service. For most travellers this is the honest main use case, whatever the security marketing says.
It stops the network operator seeing your traffic. On hotel, airport, and cafĂ© wifi, whoever runs the network can see which sites you connect to. Modern HTTPS already hides the contents of what you’re doing, so this is a meaningful privacy improvement rather than the catastrophe-prevention it’s often sold as.
It works around local restrictions. Some countries block messaging apps, news sites, or VoIP. A VPN routes around that, though in the countries where this matters most, VPN use is itself restricted, and the tools are actively blocked.
The threat that’s usually overstated
Public wifi is genuinely less safe than your home network. But the classic scenario, someone silently reading your bank login from across the lounge, has been largely engineered out. Nearly all traffic is encrypted in transit now, and browsers refuse insecure connections to sensitive sites.
We’d rather say that plainly than sell a VPN on a threat model from 2012. It’s still a sensible purchase. It’s just sensible for slightly boring reasons: convenience, consistency, and keeping your browsing away from whoever runs the network.
What actually matters when choosing
Server locations you’ll really use
Providers advertise server counts in the thousands. The number is close to meaningless. What matters is whether there’s a server in your home country, for getting your own services working, and one in the region you’re travelling to, for speed.
Speed over distance
Connecting from Asia back to a European server means your traffic physically crosses the planet twice. Some loss is unavoidable. The gap between providers shows up most on long-haul connections, which is exactly the case travellers care about and the one most reviews test least.
Whether it works where you’re going
A handful of countries actively block VPN protocols. If you’re travelling somewhere with heavy filtering, you need a provider with obfuscation: traffic disguised to look like ordinary browsing. This is a genuine differentiator and worth checking before you fly, because the provider’s website may itself be blocked once you land.
Devices and sharing
Count what you’re actually carrying: phone, laptop, tablet, maybe a partner’s phone. Some providers cap simultaneous connections; some don’t. For a family trip this is often the deciding factor.
The logging question
Every provider claims not to log. The ones worth trusting have commissioned independent audits and published the results, and are based somewhere without mandatory data-retention laws. Treat an unaudited no-logs claim as marketing.
A note on legality
VPNs are legal in most of the world. In a small number of countries they’re restricted or require government approval, and in a few, using an unapproved one carries real penalties. Check the rules for your destination before you travel, and check the destination’s own official guidance rather than a blog post. The UK’s foreign travel advice and US State Department advisories both cover local law, and the rules do change.
