SafetyWing vs Heymondo (2026): Open-Ended vs Defined Trips

By |Last updated: 11 September 2026|How we test

I buy travel insurance per trip, and I read the wording before I pay. These two sell opposite answers to the same fear. SafetyWing bills like a subscription and assumes you might never book the flight home; Heymondo prices your exact dates and spends the premium on ceilings. Below: the prices, the ceilings, the deductible gap, and what each claims path asks of you.

Article Summary

  • SafetyWing: $62.72 per 4 weeks (ages 18-39), renews until cancelled, $250,000 medical ceiling, $250 deductible
  • Heymondo: per-trip pricing, no deductible on single-trip plans, ceilings from $100,000 (our US-issued quotes) to $10 million (EU-issued plans)
  • Claims paths: SafetyWing processes in 10 to 15 business days and pays 7 to 10 after approval; Heymondo triages through its app
  • Shared fine print: scooters carry conditions on both: SafetyWing requires a licence for the vehicle class, Heymondo’s wording instead excludes two-wheelers above 75cc

Two products answering different questions

Comparison pages usually open with a coverage table. Mine is below, but the table is the second question. The first is one only you can answer: do you know when this trip ends? Heymondo wants exact dates and prices them as a block. SafetyWing does not care. Its Nomad Insurance bills every four weeks like a streaming service and renews until you cancel. It will even start while you are already three countries deep; per SafetyWing’s product pages, that mid-trip start is the point of the design.

Each model charges for its own kind of honesty. A per-trip policy can price sharply because your dates put a fence around the risk; the insurer knows its exposure ends on the 14th. A subscription prices the ambiguity instead, and it fails the way subscriptions fail: it keeps billing when the trip quietly ends. Fly home, forget to cancel, and the next four-week charge lands anyway. SafetyWing makes cancelling painless, but the remembering is yours, while a Heymondo policy expires on its own. Neither behaviour is wrong. They are tuned for different shapes of travel.

My own buying habit sits on the Heymondo side of the line: I take out per-trip cover when an itinerary gets intensive, and I read the exclusions before paying. I have not filed a claim with either company, so everything below stands on the policy wording and on prices we pulled ourselves, never on a war story. For the single-product deep dives, see our SafetyWing review and Heymondo review. This page is about the choice between them.

Pricing one month, both ways

In July 2026 we ran a one-month, US-to-Thailand trip through Heymondo’s quote engine, and in September we ran the identical trip again: the three tiers came back at $115.16, $159.36 and $195.25 both times, to the cent. The benefit table on that US-issued quote lists $100,000 of emergency medical cover with $250,000 of evacuation on the Medical and Top tiers, rising to $200,000 and $500,000 on Premium.

Heymondo quote result for one month US to Thailand, January 2027: Medical $115.16, Top $159.36, Premium $195.25
The September 2026 re-run of our US-to-Thailand quote, one month on January 2027 dates: Medical $115.16, Top $159.36, Premium $195.25, the same three prices the July quote returned.

The same month under SafetyWing is one four-week Essential period at $62.72 for ages 18 to 39 (September 2026), with the $250,000 overall ceiling and a $250 deductible per coverage period from the WorldTrips coverage document.

The ceiling depends on where your policy is issued. Heymondo’s headline figure, medical expenses up to $10 million (September 2026), belongs to EU-issued single-trip plans. Our US quotes were underwritten differently and topped out at $100,000 to $200,000 by tier. Read the summary on your own quote, not the homepage.

So a defined month costs roughly double with Heymondo at the entry tier. The extra $52 buys no deductible and an evacuation line 2.5 times the size of SafetyWing’s lifetime $100,000. For a European buyer, the same trade includes the seven-figure medical ceiling, and at that point the price gap stops being the interesting number. The deductible changes small-claim maths too: a $400 clinic bill in Bangkok returns about $150 under Essential’s $250-per-period deductible, and the full amount under Heymondo. One dented trip can eat the premium gap on its own.

Heymondo single-trip benefit list: 10 million dollars medical, 1500 travel disruption, excess deductible optional
Heymondo’s benefit ladder on a standard single-trip view: $10M medical at the top, and the excess/deductible row is optional rather than default.

What claims look like from the passenger seat

SafetyWing claims run through a web portal, receipts and reports attached. The pattern across published claim write-ups is consistent: documented claims pay, undocumented ones stall. For the schedule, SafetyWing’s own claims guide says claims are usually processed within 10 to 15 business days, with funds arriving 7 to 10 business days after approval (September 2026). Stack the two and even a clean claim spends around a month in the system, sometimes more. The calendar goes into the approval queue, so file complete the first time.

Heymondo triages through the app. Medical chat and video consultation run 24/7, and assistance calls and claims start from the same screen, per Heymondo’s travel insurance page (September 2026). The back office behind that emergency layer keeps office hours, Monday to Friday 9:00 to 18:00 GMT+1, per Heymondo’s contact page (July 2026). The split mirrors the products themselves: SafetyWing assumes forms and patience, Heymondo assumes the phone in your pocket handles the first hour. Under either brand, the claim you can document is the claim that pays. The difference is what you are doing on the bad day itself: assembling PDFs for a portal later, or opening a chat that already holds your policy.

The scooter clauses, and how they differ

Rent a scooter in Chiang Mai or Canggu and the two wordings part ways. SafetyWing’s help centre wants you properly licensed for the vehicle class and wearing proper safety gear such as a helmet. It excludes racing, and above 50cc it requires the Adventure Sports add-on for any cover at all (September 2026); the coverage document also shuts out motorised dirt bikes and quads. Heymondo’s wording carries the standard licence requirement too. That matters because an International Driving Permit only certifies licences you already hold. A car licence plus an IDP does not make a 150cc rental legal, and an illegal ride is an uninsured ride under either wording.

SafetyWing help centre motorbike rules: licence for the class, safety gear, no racing, Adventure Sports add-on above 50cc
SafetyWing’s help centre on two wheels: licensed for the class, gear on, no racing, and above 50cc only with the Adventure Sports add-on.

Verdict by traveller type

  • Open-ended, budget-first, or already abroad: SafetyWing. It renews every four weeks and starts mid-trip, and of these two it is by far the cheaper way to stay continuously covered.
  • Defined trip with booked dates: Heymondo. Zero deductible, and on EU-issued policies, ceilings SafetyWing does not attempt.
  • US residents: compare the limits on your issued quote rather than the marketing page. The $100,000 medical line on ours sits below SafetyWing’s $250,000.
  • Long stays with a known end date: Heymondo’s Long Stay plan covers up to $2.5 million in medical expenses with a $250 excess on medical costs (September 2026); SafetyWing Complete answers at $177.50 a month and, per its pricing page, folds in routine medical care.
  • Ages 65 to 69: SafetyWing’s overall maximum drops to $100,000, which erases most of its coverage argument. Price the per-trip route first.
Open-ended travel

SafetyWing

Renews every four weeks until you cancel and starts mid-trip, keeping a credible medical floor under a nomad life.

Check SafetyWing

Defined trips

Heymondo

Prices your exact dates with no deductible and puts assistance and claims in the same app as your policy.

Check Heymondo

Decide the calendar question first. Once you know whether the trip has an end date, the brand question mostly answers itself, and the wording you still need to read shrinks to one document instead of two.

FAQ

Is SafetyWing cheaper than Heymondo?

For open-ended travel, yes. SafetyWing Essential runs $62.72 per four weeks for ages 18 to 39 (September 2026) and never needs a requote. For a single defined month, our July 2026 Heymondo quote started at $115.16, roughly double, but it bought a policy with no deductible and, on EU-issued plans, far higher medical ceilings. Cheap depends on which risk you are pricing.

Does SafetyWing or Heymondo have a deductible?

SafetyWing Essential carries a $250 deductible per coverage period, so small claims land partly on you. Heymondo states its single-trip policies have no deductible (September 2026), which makes mid-sized claims, a clinic visit or a stolen bag, worth filing from the first dollar. The exception is Heymondo’s Long Stay plan, which carries a $250 excess on medical expenses only.

Do SafetyWing and Heymondo cover scooter accidents?

Both can, conditionally. SafetyWing wants a licence valid for the vehicle class and proper safety gear such as a helmet; racing is excluded, and anything above 50cc needs its Adventure Sports add-on (September 2026). Its coverage document also excludes motorised dirt bikes and quads. Heymondo’s general conditions take the opposite route: no licence clause at all, but accident cover stops at two-wheelers above 75cc, and motorised-vehicle sports sit in the exclusions (September 2026). Ride outside those lines, unlicensed on a 150cc with SafetyWing, or any 125cc with Heymondo, and the claim dies on the wording.
